House Speaker Terie Norelli told the Portsmouth Herald she fully expects gambling will be debated again in the state house next year after a study commission completes work and fiscal woes for the next budget — without one time federal stimulus money — looks bleeker.
That said, Norelli believes that House members are weary of gambling even though it enjoys support in the Senate.
Overall, she said the six-month session, completed two weeks ago was “historic” and about issues far beyond just the budget and gay marriage. One issue that didn’t get nearly enough attention, she said, was the fact that the Legislature, for the first time, defined the state’s role in public education.
“We have no lawsuits, no pending lawsuits,” she said told the Herald about Supreme Court challenges on education funding. “This is a major accomplishment.”
