In interview, Vilsack not wondering ‘what if’

by James Pindell

CONCORD — Two and a half years ago Tom Vilsack had just left his post as Iowa’s governor to become a full time Democratic presidential candidate. He stood in front of Bob MacLellan’s 7th grade geography class at Londonderry Middle School.

He spoke slowly, but respectfully, to the 30 students explaining China’s role in the Darfur situation using the chalkboard and the pull down world map.

That was back in January 2007 in what was his last visit before dropping a month later.

On his first return to the state today, Vilsack visited as Obama’s Agriculture Secretary addressing dairy price supports with the same teaching mentality as he did in Londonderry.

In an interview Vilsack said when he flew into the state this morning he wasn’t thinking about what could have been.

“We have the right president and hopefully the right USDA Secretary,” Vilsack said referring to himself. “When I think of New Hampshire I usually think of the beauty and the diversity of the geography.”
